The holiday shopping season is here…love it or hate it, it’s upon us. With that in mind we thought we’d do our best to highlight some cool, unique businesses right here in our own city to spend your dollars at. After all, small businesses are the heart of Milwaukee.
First to bat is our neighbor Sachen (zok-hen) Contemporary Imports. Sachen is German for ‘things’ and store owner Stacey Zielinski has taken her passion for European design to bring you a store full of just that, well designed and thought out things. She noticed from her time living in Europe that the aesthetic and quality of certain items was much higher and when she moved back to Milwaukee her entrepreneurial spirit took over. Open since April of 2011 Sachen has been bringing Milwaukee a wide array of cool, European goods from toys to housewares and everything in between. Stacey does her best to highlight the story behind the goods and even has a rotating ‘Featured Country’ board that profiles a given country and their manufacturers she stocks. We aren’t talking IKEA designed in Sweden made in China stuff either. Just about every item was conceived and constructed in said country. What she doesn’t bring from other countries she finds here in Milwaukee with a selection of locally designed and crafted items. Truly one of the last ‘something for everyone’ shops that I can think of, even for the person who has everything. The slideshow above shows some of my favorite items like the natural wood iPhone alarm dock, monkey storage jars, travel diary, mustache stash tin, self watering plant pots, bento style lunch boxes, and the natural rubber bath toys for little dudes. Stop by and see Stacey along with her friendly and knowledgable staff or take a glimpse at her webstore to get a better idea of what she’s serving up.
Sachen is offering people a chance to nominate a deserving family this holiday season for a $250 shopping spree, see their Facebook page for full details.
